Dragon Startup Tips for Office 2003 Users:
Renaming Microsoft Office Shortcuts
Speaking Solutions, Inc. © 2003
Microsoft changed their shortcut naming convention in Office 2003. Dragon can open any application as long as its shortcut is found in the Start, All Programs menu. To open any program you must speak it exactly by the name of the assigned shortcut. Traditionally, Microsoft Office used the following names:
- START MICROSOFT WORD
- OPEN MICROSOFT EXCEL
However, beginning with Office 2003, Microsoft made these shortcut names much longer! In 2003 you must say:
- START MICROSOFT OFFICE WORD 2003
- OPEN MICROSOFT OFFICE EXCEL 2003
- START MICROSOFT OFFICE POWERPOINT 2003
These new Microsoft 2003 names are a mouthful! Here is a clever way to save time and to avoid stumbling over all of these long shortcut names.
RENAMING MICROSOFT OFFICE SHORTCUTS
Step 1. Choose Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office.
Step 2. Right-click on the shortcut name Microsoft Office Word 2003. (Note: If you are using a Wacom pen, front click on the shortcut name. If you are using a Tablet PC, rest the tip of your digital pen directly on the filename, wait for the mouse to appear and then lift the pen.)
Step 3. Choose Rename from the pop-up menu.
Step 4. Change the name to Microsoft Word.
Note: You may wish to change the shortcut name to Word. This way, you can open the program by simply saying:
- START WORD
Step 5. Shorten the names of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint following the same instructions 1 - 4 above.
