Troubleshooting 1-4:
What if Voice Commands Are Not Working Properly in Word?

Speaking Solutions, Inc. © 2002

If Microsoft Word isn't working properly with basic voice commands, checking the following settings may help:

  1. Change Macro Security Level in Microsoft Word and Load the dgnword.dot File into the Microsoft Word Templates
  2. Activate Active Accessibility
  3. Check for Disabled Items
  4. Run Dragon Repair
  5. Office 2003 Users, Install the Dragon 7.3 (SP2) Update

Change Macro Security Level in Microsoft Word

I. Dragon NaturallySpeaking makes use of a wide variety of macros to accomplish certain voice-writing tasks. Set the macro security in Microsoft Word to medium. Choose Tools, Macros, Security, change the setting to Medium and click OK.

Load the dgnword.dot File into the Microsoft Word Templates

II. Choose Tools, Templates and Add-Ins. Make sure the document template says Normal.

III. You may need to add the dgnword.dot file to your Global Templates and Add-Ins. If this file isn't there, choose Add, then follow this path to the dgnword.dot file:

c:/Program files/ScanSoft/NaturallySpeaking/ program/dgnword.dot.

Choose the file followed by OK. Place a check mark by the file as seen below and then click OK again.

IV. You will then be asked if you want to "Enable Macros." Choose the Enable Macros button.

V. Try your comrades in Word. If it still doesn't work normally, close and restart Microsoft Word, and you should be good to go!

Activate ActiveAccessibility

I. Activate Active Accessibility in Dragon NaturallySpeaking by choosing Tools, Options from the DragonBar, followed by Miscellaneous, Use Active Accessibility for menu and dialog control.

Check for Disabled Items

Perhaps Microsoft Office XP's built-in speech recognition has taken over and disabled Dragon NaturallySpeaking. In this case:

I. Open Microsoft Word XP.

II. Click on the Help menu and choose About Microsoft Word XP.

III. Click the Disabled items button.

IV. Check to see if dgnword.dll is in the list.

V. If dngword.dll is in the list, highlight it and check the Enable button. (Note: If dngword.dll appears more than once, do this for every instance.)

Run Dragon Repair

If all else fails, before your reinstall everything from scratch, try running Dragon's Repair utility. In this case:

I. Insert your Dragon install CD.

II. Run the Repair option.

III. Restart your computer.

IV. Remember to open Dragon before you start Word.

Repairing Version 7.3:

To perform a "Repair" operation on the NaturallySpeaking installation after the Service Pack has been installed, first run the "Repair" operation from the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel and then reinstall the Service Pack. The NaturallySpeaking version 7 installation CD-ROM may need to be inserted into the CD-ROM drive to complete the "Repair" operation. The Repair operation is not complete until the Service Pack is reinstalled. We recommend keeping the Service Pack on the computer for future use or it can be downloaded again from the ScanSoft support web site.
