JAMES MADISON AND THE WAR OF 1812

James Madison became president in 1809 and served two terms through 1817. He inherited the presidency at a difficult time. England and France were fighting a global conflict called the Napoleonic wars. As a result the US economy was suffering. The United States attempted to pursue a policy of neutrality, but its ships were being attacked on the high seas by both sides. Eventually, through a series of diplomatic maneuvers, Napoleon, the leader or France agreed to respect American neutrality. This caused the United States to cut off trade and negotiations with Britain.

Madison also faced hostilities on the western frontier. Native Americans and settlers were in constant conflict. Many of the Indian tribes had become allies of Great Britain. The Chief of the Shawnee tribe, Tecumseh, even attempted to form a Confederacy of frontier tribes to resist American settlement.

Meanwhile, a growing group of War Hawks was pushing for war against England. There were several reasons for the war. Great Britain did not respect American neutrality and would kidnap sailors from American ships, forcing them to serve on British warships. The British also agitated the Indian tribes on the western frontier. While there was opposition to the war with England, especially from Federalists in New England, war was eventually declared in June of 1812.

The war was a terrible ordeal for everyone, including the President and his family. In August of 1814, British troops burned the nation's capital. Dolly Madison, the First Lady, managed to save many valuable government documents from the flames, including the Declaration of Independence, a portrait of George Washington, and the national seal.

The war finally ended in December of 1814, following months of negotiations. Ironically, two weeks after peace was declared, the bloodiest battle of the war took place in New Orleans. Word of the peace settlement had not yet traveled to the front lines when British troops attacked the city. General Andrew Jackson fought a brilliant defensive campaign. The British lost more than 2000 soldiers and the Americans suffered only 21 losses.
