Report Formatting Commands

in DNS 8 and Ms Word 2003

Training Capsule 37 Previewing Formatting Commands and Exercises 58-68 are designed to teach students how to create and format multi-page reports. These skills are reinforced and expanded upon in advanced Exercises 77 through 88. Here are a few additional related commands you can demonstrate for your students. I find these extremely helpful when working with long documents and MLA-style reports.

* INSERT PAGE BREAK
* INCREASE INDENT
* DECREASE INDENT
* (GO TO) PAGE #
* GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE
* SINGLE SPACE THAT
* DOUBLE SPACE THAT

Open a multipage document. Use the * GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE to move to the end of the first page. Then say * INSERT PAGE BREAK to show students how to insert forced page breaks into a document.

Find a lengthy quotation. Use the * INCREASE INDENT command to indent the entire paragraph properly. If you go too far, use the * DECREASE INDENT to realign the paragraph.

Use the * SINGLE SPACE THAT and the * DOUBLE SPACE THAT commands to properly change the paragraphs to single or double spacing. If extra spaces appear between paragraphs, use the line commands to delete the offending lines with * DELETE LINE.
