Day 1: PowerPointChapter 1 - Part 1: pages 2-5By Karl Barksdale © 2002
I put this PowerPoint slide show together to introduce the course and get things started. The slide show follows pages 2-5 very closely, introducing vocabulary, concepts, and key points - serving as a pre-reading anticipatory exercise. Slideshow Breakdown Slide 1: Welcome Slide: Explain that DigiTools is short for digital communications tools/systems. We all need to learn DigiTools in order to communicate with others in school, business, and in our professional lives. Slide 2: This slide gives a quick definition of what DigiTools are while introducing six of the early vocabulary words required in this chapter. Try to make sure that students understand what "processing" means. It's surprising how many kids don't really understand the concept. I explain that if they enter 2 + 2 = into the calculator, the computer "thinks" and "processes" the numbers, producing the answer. It's a simple example that seems to make the point. Slide 3: Provides examples of some hardware DigiTools including network connections, computers, digital pens with tablet PCs, and phones. Slide 4: This slide allows students to brainstorm what they can do with DigiTools. Eventually, they come up with things like playing video games, phoning a friend, doing instant messaging, writing reports, and creating PowerPoint presentations. I always try to end the discussion emphasizing that they can download music from the Internet using DigiTools. You will see why in the next section. Slide 5: Digital Flow of Information, is representative of Figure 1-2. I explain the five aspects of a Digital Message with music as the example. Recording artists have a "message" they wish to share through music and lyrics. They "input" that message (music) into "hardware" found in recording studios. "Software" in the recording studio's computers is used to mix the songs. In fact, the band may record one day and the vocals may be put in later. The "output" is the song, which can be posted onto the Internet and downloaded. Slide 6: This slide presents reasons why students need to learn how to use DigiTools effectively. 1) DigiTools are Fun! (Who doesn't want to download music, use instant messaging, or digitally edit photos?) But, the more pressing reason is that DigiTools are 2) Essential for business, career, and academic success! Slide 7: What you will be doing: Provides the chance to explain key elements of the course and book, for example:
Slide 8: Disclosure & Activity 1-1, provides a chance to explain and pass out the disclosure memo and Activity 1-1 worksheet. Click here to learn more. Download Choose to download: : PowerPoint Download
